Repair & Convert 200 Series (1929-1957)

First we will professionally examine and test your 200 series telephone in our workshop to check what needs to be repaired, adjusted or converted. While doing this we will check for any broken or faulty parts such as braided cords, induction coils, bells or rotary dial etc.

Next we will e-mail you with the options (see below) and costs of any broken or faulty components if required. We always do this before we carry out any work, so you have the option of not proceeding and just paying the return postage costs to have the telephone returned to you.

After confirmation to proceed and payment from yourself (at the cost agreed) we will carry out the work.

Repair & Service £20 (Option 1)

Repair any mechanical and/or electrical faults.

We will then perform a comprehensive mechanical and electrical service of the 200 series telephone and Bell Set.

Then we will adjust all the mechanical components such as telephone bells, switch hooks and dial to ensure optimum performance of your 200 Series telephone and Bell Set.

Please note the cost of any faulty part that needs replacing would be additional to these labour costs.

Finally we will test the telephone thoroughly on our test switchboard and on a comprehensive telephone tester over several days before returning it to you.

Conversion £35 (Option 2)

Professionally Convert the telephone Bell Set so that it has as REN of 1, also that it does not interfere with other phones or Broadband etc.

Conversion includes the cost of the following parts:

  • Fitting a modern 3m black high quality (round profile) plastic BT style line cord between the telephone and the standard BT socket (we have these made in the UK to the correct GPO colour codes).
  • Replacing the carbon granule microphone with a more modern and crackle free electret electronic microphone.

We will then perform a comprehensive mechanical and electrical service of the telephone.

Then we will adjust all the mechanical components such as bells, switch hooks and dial speed to ensure optimum performance of the phone.

Full Restoration £75 (Option 3)

This includes all the work we would perform in our option 2, however in addition while the telephone is apart we will also professionally clean and polish every individual piece of Bakelite and chrome.

Restoring Bakelite is a four stage process that requires a lot of "time" and effort using the correct cleaning/polishing compounds and restoration techniques. Time is the majority of the cost.

We NEVER use dyes or coloured polishes, as these will eventually wear off.

As with the other options we will test the telephone thoroughly on a comprehensive telephone tester before returning it to you.

We like to keep the Bakelite 200 series telephone and Bell Set on test for five to seven days after completing a full restoration.

As Bakelite is a thermosetting plastic it is not feasible to repair any cracks or splits.

200 Series Enquiry form

Please note that the 200 series telephones did not contain an internal bell so for your telephone to ring on incoming calls you should have a Bakelite Bell Set or a Wooden Bell Box.

Because of the size and weight of a 200 series Bakelite Telephone including the "Bell Set" we charge £15 for the return P&P.

In 1929 the revolutionary and elegantly curved pyramid shaped Tele 162 table rotary dial telephones were the first Bakelite Telephones to be introduced in the UK. These vintage telephones superseded the era of the "Candlestick" telephone. However the GPO version still required a separate "Bell Set" for both correct speech and bells.

In the early 1930's having a bell separate from the telephone was normal practice. It was also possible to mount the Bakelite "Bell Set" underneath the telephone and this was known at the time as a "Combined Set" or much later by some dealers as a "King Pyramid".

The Tele 232 was a development on from the Tele 162 and was introduced in 1934. It looked exactly the same but contained an improved ASTIC circuit that improved the sound quality of the telephone.
